Summer camp is supposed to be fun, but if you want to help keep your kids safe, the first stop is the doctor's office for a check up. Doctors say this is where they will look for anything abnormal during a physical exam, such as rashes or a heart condition that has been overlooked. It is also recommended that campers be up to date on their shots.

Once the children are at camp, doctors say that most of the health concerns are pretty mild, like cuts and insect bites.

The sun and heat can pose serious health risks if campers and staff don't take the proper precautions. Most camps have doctors and nurses on their staff to help, but that is not always the case.

Parents should ask in advance about the camp's policy for handling medical emergencies.
