Nelson Splash Park Opens Early August

By: City of Abilene Press Release
Updated: July 31, 2012
ABILENE, Texas - The grand opening of the splash park located in Nelson Park will take place Saturday, Aug. 4 at 11 a.m. Dubbed "Nelson Splash," the 3,000 square foot splash park is located next to the Abilene Zoo, Camp Barkeley Dog Park, Nelson Lake, Fort Imagination playground and Nelson Park softball fields.

It has areas for both younger and older children, water features that are triggered by sensors, a UV filtration system, shaded picnic tables and restroom facilities.

"We are thrilled to officially open Nelson Splash which has truly been a cooperative community effort," said Mayor Norm Archibald. "The park will be a gathering place for Abilene citizens and those visiting our community to enjoy."

Drawing from a survey of Abilene residents, the City of Abilene had placed a splash park on the Parks Master Plan. Nelson Splash became a reality when the Together 2011 committee, a group of 22 civically minded Abilene agencies was formed.

Together 2011 and the City of Abilene joined together in an effort to broaden, beautify and generally better the community through a series of projects including the splash park. Nelson Splash was made possible through the dedicated work and generous donations of the Together 2011 committee, the City of Abilene and other major donors.
