According to Dr. Christie, nearly 51 million hours in the classroom are lost by students in the U.S. each year, due to dental maintenance.
"Dental decay is the most prevalent recurring disease among school children," explains Dr. Christie.
And time to prevent losing hours behind a desk for most students is rapidly vanishing.
"We don't have that much longer till school starts," explains Dr. Christie Leedy with Abilene Dental. "It's so important when you're gathering all your supplies for back to school, don't forget the things that are also important for keeping healthy teeth and helping protect them also."
Some of the items Dr. Christie recommends adding to your back to school supplies list, besides the normal brushing and flossing gear, are things like "brush-ups."
"These are great to take to school with you," says Dr. Christie, "particularly if anyone has braces and they need to brush after lunch."
Another must have hygiene item, according to Dr. Christie, especially for athletes is a mouth guard.
"It used to be only for football," explains Dr. Christie, "but now we know basketball causes a lot of teeth to be lost during the school year."
Dr. Christie recommends getting your children's annual dentist appointment in before the school year starts, including college kids preparing to leave the nest.
