Big Lake Standoff Ends, Suspect Identified as Lake Brownwood Resident

UPDATE 08/07/12: The Department of Public Safety has confirmed Brownwood resident and suspected shooter, Marcus Madison, has died.

UPDATE: Lise Tipton of BrownwoodNews.com is reporting that the suspect has been identified as a Brownwood Resident.

The suspect accused of killing Deputy Josh Mitchell in a standoff with law enforcement in Big Lake, Texas has been identified as 43-year-old Marcus Wade Madison.  The standoff ended on Thursday, and the suspect is reported to have been taken to the hospital for treatment.

Brown County jail records and Brown County Sheriff's reports indicate that Madison is a resident of Lake Brownwood and that he has a history with Brown County law enforcement. Madison was arrested by Brown County deputies less than a month ago, according to reports.  Madison was charged at that time with Assault Family Violence with Injury and while being placed under arrest, Madison resisted and continued to fight deputies, even after being taken down, the report states regarding the July 7th incident.  He was additionally charged with Resisting Arrest and Obstruction/Retaliation at that time.

Officials from Big Lake report that around 6:00pm Wednesday evening, law enforcement was attempting to serve a warrant on a man at a Big Lake residence when Deputy Josh Mitchell of the Reagan County Sheriff's Office was fatally shot during what then became a standoff with officers.  The man, later identified as Madison, was reported to have barricaded himself in a residence in the 1100 block of Main Street in Big Lake and that several surrounding houses were evacuated for the safety of the residents reports, law enforcement officials said in a statement.

UPDATE: SWAT officers entered through the back door of the residence of the father of Marcus Madison located at 1109 N. Main. Marcus's father was initially in the home with him, but later came out and helped police by giving them a layout of the home. They found Madison in a closet. He came out and was transported to San Angelo with wounds to the face.
Josh Mitchell, who had been with the Sheriff's Department since he was 18, had gone alone to the residence yesterday to peacefuly speak with Marcus Madison about an incident earlier in the day.

The suspect is still barricaded in a residence in Big Lake, Texas.  Law enforcement officials from around the area are assisting and supporting the Reagan County Sheriff's Office.  The Texas Rangers are on scene and negotiations are ongoing

At just after 6:00 P.M. Wednesday evening August 1st, law enforcement officers were attempting to contact a suspect in Big Lake, Reagan County, Texas.  The person was located near the 1100 block of Main Street in Big Lake.  A law enforcement office was shot.  The suspect barricaded himself in a residence in Big Lake, Texas near that same location.  Several area houses were evacuated as a safety precaution.

Big Lake is located between Midland and Ozona, Texas.

UPDATE: Our crew on scene says the Midland assault vehicle has pulled back from the home the alleged gunman has barricaded himself in, but Lubbock tactical team is still in position close to the home.

UPDATE: Our crew on scene says they could hear sirens and what sounded like tear gas canisters shooting off as units approached the home the alleged gunman barricaded himself in.

UPDATE: Law enforcement has shut off all power and gas to the home the alleged gunman has barricaded himself in.  It's possible he has multiple weapons inside.

Several law enforcement agencies are looking to apprehend the man accused of fatally shooting a Reagan County Sheriff's deputy and then barricading himself in a Big Lake home Wednesday evening.

According to The Ozona Stockman and The Big Lake Wildcat, a gunman shot deputy Josh Mitchell in Big Lake Wednesday afternoon

Officials with the Brewster County Sheriff's Office say Mitchell was shot while serving a warrant.

Mitchell was rushed to a Reagan County Memorial Hospital after the shooting, but he didn't survive.

The Ozona Stockman and The Big Lake Wildcat report that the accused shooter barricaded himself with several weapons in a home at 12th Street and Main Street in Big Lake.

Big Lake residents were urged to avoid the area Wednesday night.

The First Baptist Church in Big Lake also their doors for those displaced by the shooting and standoff Wednesday night and those looking to come together in prayer during their time of mourning.

Upton County Sheriff's deputies and Texas Department of Public Safety troopers say they were called to the scene for backup after the shooting. And DPS adds they also launched a helicopter to circle the scene.

The Irion County Sheriff's Office reports that sheriff's deputies from Reagan County, Irion County, Sterling County and Reagan County along with Texas Parks and Wildlife Department officials were also called into the to the scene.

Midland Police tell say, they sent a SWAT team and negotiator to the scene Wednesday evening.

The Big Lake Wildcat reported that the suspect's home remained surrounded by law enforcement, as of 11:45 PM Wednesday
   
Reagan County officials were not releasing any details on the shooting Wednesday evening. Authorities with the Reagan County Sheriff's Office only said they are working an "incident."
