"For saving energy, the higher the temperature you can have on your thermostat and still be comfortable, the less cost you're gonna have operating that particular piece of equipment", says Kennith Rich, owner of Hall Air Conditioning.

"You can raise the temperature four to five degrees during the day when you're not at home, then lower the temperature back down four or five degrees when you arrive. So if you keep the temp at 78 during the day, you could raise it up to 82 when you're gone to work, to not spend that money on utilities", Rich explains.

"I wouldn't recommend going any higher than four or five degrees, because the cost of lowering the temperature back down would offset what you did to save the money", Rich tells us.

"The biggest mistake is that they don't maintain their indoor air filter. They don't think about changing or cleaning the filter until their AC isn't cooling or working, and then all of a sudden it's the first thing they go look at. What I recommend a homeowner to do is, when they are writing their utility bill, use that as a reminder to go check the filter", says Rich.

"Once they get that done and get it good and clean, you need to wash this thing out two or three times per year, depending on where you live and the grass that's around. If you live out in the country around dirt and things of that nature, you'll have to do it more frequently", Rich tells us.

"Those are the most important things a homeowner can do to maintain their piece of equipment, and keep it lasting a long time, and efficiently, and keep it cool in their home correctly".

Rich also tells us that most air conditioning units, no matter the brand, are comparable with cooling down your home. However, you can look for energy efficient styles that can cut back on power.
