Fire Rekindles, Burns 45 More Acres

A fire that burned 20 acres on Wednesday near County Road 143 and County Road 144 rekindled on Thursday and firefighters battled the blaze until about midnight that night.

They continued to monitor the fire on Friday morning as well.

Battling the blaze were the Sweetwater Fire Department, Texas Forest Service, Maryneal Volunteer Fire Department, Nolan Volunteer Fire Department and Lake Sweetwater Volunteer Fire Department.

Approximately 45 more acres burned in Nolan County near the TA truck stop, but no structures were threatened. According to Sweetwater Fire Chief Grant Madden, the fire rekindled due to a fire line not being able to be cut.

"There was a very high pressure liquid gas pipeline in the vicinity of the fire and we were not able to get the maintainer near there to cut a fire line, causing the fire to rekindle. We did the best with what we could, but were not able to build a defensive line to stop the fire from spreading."
