LSC Honors Media With Annual Awards

By: Lone Star Conference Press Release
Updated: August 3, 2012
RICHARDSON, Texas - Sportswriter David Flores was recognized for the second time and Broadcaster Don Elder was honored for the first occasion as the annual Lone Star Conference media awards were announced by league officials.

Flores won the Kirk Hill Award as the league's top sportswriter, while Elder was recognized with the Jake Trussell Award as the outstanding broadcaster of the year.

The awards, which distinguish those who best promote the LSC and its members through their work in the media, are selected annually by sports information directors at the LSC's 11 member institutions.  The Kirk Hill Award for Sportswriter of the Year is named in honor of the late Kirk Hill of the Houston Post who won the first award in 1963.  The Jake Trussell Award for Sportscaster of the Year is in memory of the late Jake Trussell of Kingsville who broadcasted contests for Texas A&M-Kingsville.

Flores, who also received this award in 1982, knows the LSC and has an affinity for the league.  A Texas A&M-Kingsville graduate, he was formerly a writer at the Express-News before joining KENS-TV, the CBS affiliate in San Antonio.

Elder has provided nearly two decades of broadcasting excellence for the ENMU football, basketball and baseball teams. His background as a history professor at Eastern allows him to add many historical anecdotes in addition to numerous pop-culture references, making his broadcasts enjoyable to all demographics. Over the last few seasons, he has participated in a sports communication class, which allows ENMU students to join the broadcast at home games.
