Brown County Approves Burn Ban

After months of consideration, Brown County Commissioners unanimously approved a burn ban for the county on Monday.

"I'm in favor of a burn ban this time," said Commissioner Precinct 2, Joel Kelton "Our fire department guys also came to me and said that it is time.  Precinct 2 would be in favor of a burn ban."

The burn ban was unanimously approved and will be in place for 90 days unless removed by a vote of the Commissioners Court prior to that time.

Brown County lifted the last burn ban in October 2011 and has had a burn ban consideration on almost every Commissioners Court agenda since that time.

In other items addressed by Brown County Commissioners Court on Monday:

  • Commissioners approved the appointment of Kevin Holamon to the Child Welfare Board.
  • Commissioners approved hiring replacement employees to the Brown County Jail.

*Brown County Surveyor Don King recommended the purchase of 300 jackets for county plats.  King said that 200 of the jackets need to be replaced because they are causing plats to deteriorate because of the material they are made from.  The other 100 will be for future plats.  King said that a company in Arlington as agreed to fabricate the jackets for approximately $15 each.  Commissioners agreed to let King send a jacket to the company for an exact estimate before approval.

*King also gave a report to commissioners about a request from a group of citizens looking to expand the Brown County Water Improvement District to the entire county.  King said that a full metes and bounds description of the county would be required to do this which does not exist.  King was concerned that if the issue were to move forward, creating a true metes and bounds description based on legal descriptions s could change the boundaries of the county.  No action was taken.

  • Commissioners approved election judges for the upcoming election and into the next year.
  • Commissioners approved the hiring of a temporary part time employee for Precinct 3.
