Details in North Abilene Shooting

By: Kristin Anderson
Updated: August 8, 2012
"This morning at 5:22 AM the Abilene Police Department received a 911 call from a residence at the 1400 block of North 17th," Chief of Police Stan Standridge explained.

That's when a North Abilene woman woke up to her estranged husband in her bedroom, with a gun.

"There was some tension in the home. He had left the home a couple weeks prior to this incident. Returned, broke in through a side window through the air conditioning unit. And basically his estranged wife woke up with him in the bedroom with a gun in his hand," Sgt. Lynn Beard said.

She called 911 and 49 year old Miguel Martinez went to the back yard. As APD responded to the call, they found him in the backyard shed.

"The suspect pointed his gun at the officers, and the officers responding by firing upon the suspect," Chief Standridge said. "The suspect was hit, and transported to a local hospital where he succumbed to his injuries."

Neighbors said they heard gun shots. And one neighbor said it didn't come as a surprise.

"I was not surprised. I saw the police cars down there. But we hear shots over here on 16th all the time and there in our back alley sometimes," said Madeen Edwards.

This is the second shooting in a week in abilene, and APD says it is up to the community to help lower the rising violent crime rate.

"I regret that we are having this type of crime in abilene. We're seeing a 10 percent increase in violent crime. Since, compared to 2011. I just call upon our community to work with us, collaborate with us and let's do some definite things to address violent crime in abilene," said Chief Standridge.
