How West Nile Affects Humans, Pets

Updated: August 9, 2012
Though several mosquitoes trapped on the north side of Abilene have tested positive for West Nile virus, no cases in humans have been reported.

The Abilene Public Health District confirms this.

Local hospitals also say there has been no one coming in with symptoms of the  virus. Regardless, this is the first time since 2008 that mosquitoes in our area have tested positive for West Nile, so the city is urging residents to protect themselves.

While the West Nile virus can pose a serious health concern for people,  we found out today what effect it can have on your pet as well.

Dr. Ellis of the Abilene Veterinary Clinic says that, although dogs and cats can contract the virus, it is not life threatening. They also tell us that pets can have the symptoms of West Nile, such as fatigue and fever, and owners may not even know it.

However, vets tell us that fortunately, pets cannot pass on the virus to humans
