Over 20  kids found out they won't be going back to school come fall. That is, the same school in Novice they went to last year. Now parents have to select another school for their K-12 students. We spoke with one woman about the transition for her and her kids.

Going into this year's summer vacation, Jodi Culwell had her plans made for the following school year, with one child going into Pre-K, and the other starting first grade. Until her plans were changed for her.

Just over a month ago, Culwell found out her kids' school in Novice is closing.

"My reaction was very very sad, it was very traumatic, we love Novice, we support Novice. We were very upset about it. It's where my husband graduated, he was valedictorian of Novice", Culwell tells us

After the shock and sentimental upset, Culwell is pleased with the change, as she is starting a new job herself, right across the street from where her kids will be going to school in Coleman.

"The kids are only one block away from me so I really like that. I think everything will work out", Culwell explains.

Coleman superintendent, Royce Young, acknowledges that transitioning to another school can be tough on kids, but hopes that former Novice students would transfer to Coleman, though they could also choose Jim Ned or Panther Creek.

"I think anytime you change schools you're going to have a transition from the standpoint of making new friends, and just knowing people, and getting to know the teachers", Young says.

Young also tells us that at  this point, only around six students from Novice have registered with Coleman schools, but with school starting back up in just over a week, he encourages parents to register soon.

Culwell also says one of her main deciding factors in choosing Coleman ISD was that she wanted to put money into Coleman County, where she lives, rather than Taylor County, where Jim Ned ISD is located.

The first day of school for Coleman schools will be August 27, and parents can register their kids anytime between now and then at the administration building in downtown Coleman.
