AHS, CHS to Host Football, Back-to-School Kickoff Celebrations

Abilene High and Cooper High are kicking off the school year and football season with a celebration for parents and fans alike.

Cougar Nation Kickoff on Thursday


Cooper High families and fans are invited to Cougar Nation Kickoff, a pep rally for the upcoming football season, on Thursday, Aug. 23 at 7 p.m. at the east parking lot on the CHS campus. Billed as a Cooper Family Spirit Night, the event will feature the CHS football teams, band, cheerleaders, flag corps, mascots and other spirit groups.

Performances are planned by the Awesome Cougar Band, Cougarettes and flag corps, and head coach Todd Moebes will address the crowd. One dollar hot dogs will be sold along with drinks, cotton candy and other snacks.

Fans can also purchase 2012 merchandise supporting the football team, band and Cougarettes.

A "Lil' Coog Corner" will be set up for face painting, balloons, and football toss, and photos can be taken with players, cheerleaders and mascots.

The event is sponsored by Cooper's Athletic Booster Club, the Band Booster Club, the Parent Partnership and Student Council. CHS football teams scrimmage in Austin against Austin Westlake on Friday, Aug. 24, before opening the regular season Friday, Aug. 31, against Wichita Falls Rider at Shotwell Stadium.

2012 AHS Eagle Extravaganza on Friday

The Abilene High Eagle football season will begin Friday, Aug. 24, at Shotwell Stadium with the 2012 Eagle Extravaganza.

The annual event will culminate with the varsity Eagles' scrimmage against Copperas Cove at 7:30 p.m. Spirit groups will be introduced and recognized prior to the varsity scrimmage at 7 p.m. Sub-varsity action against Copperas Cove precedes the varsity activities.

The two schools' junior varsity teams scrimmage at 6 p.m., and freshmen squads start the day with scrimmages at 10:30 a.m.

The AHS Booster Club will be on hand providing hamburgers, hot dogs, and other concessions for purchase. The Warbird Wagon Spirit Shop will be open for business where fans can purchase spirit items to support the Warbirds.

T-shirts, caps, stadium seats and many other new items will be available. AHS opens its regular season on Friday, Aug. 31, in Lewisville against Lewisville Hebron.
