Whether you're at home, enjoying the outdoors, taking a road trip or hanging at the beach, accidents can happen at anytime. Doctors say you need to be prepared.
That means having a first aid kit at the ready at all times. Doctors say a well stocked kit can provide easily accessible first aid care to an injured person before getting to the local hospital facility.
The American Red Cross has a list on their website of all the items families should carry in an emergency medical kit, including band-aids, gauze, antiseptic wipes, splints. Antibiotic ointment, scissors, tweezers and a space blanket are other useful items to have on hand.
It is also important to know that first aid kits vary. Adults and seniors may need different supplies, such as bigger splints and extra medication. For example, children usually need more bandaids and ointment.
Doctors also say don't forget about allergies. If someone in the family has allergies, make sure  there's an epipen in your kit.
These kits don't have to be fancy or expensive. Supplies in a plastic box will do just fine. Most stores have ready-made first aid kits that come with a first aid manual, which can be very helpful.
