You've been skunked! Now what? How do you get rid of that awful smell? Dr. Janice Price with the Windmill Animal Hospital was on hand Thursday, to give us a few tips on what to do when you've been caught of guard by a skunk.

"It's a challenge," warns Dr. Price, but the good news is, it is not impossible.

While most products bought at local stores do not work well in taking out the stink, Dr. Price says you can make your own de-skunk home brew with just a few key ingredients.

Here's what you'll need:
  • 1 Quart of Hydrogen Peroxide
  • 1/4 Cup of Sodium Bicarbonate (or Baking Soda)
  • 1 Teaspoon of Dish Detergent

"Mix it together in an open container because it's going to generate a lot of oxygen," advises Dr. Price. "If you seal it up it's going to blow up."

Dr. Price also recommends mixing each batch fresh each time you use it and wearing gloves to prevent the stink from spreading. The brew will work on both animals as well as their human counterparts.

So how do you keep skunks from getting into your yard in the first place?

Dr. Price advises that, although a nice thought, leaving food out for stray animals will ultimate attract much more than you bargained for.

"The best bet is to make sure there are no food sources in your backyard," explains Dr. Price. "Also make sure there are no convenient places for them to den up."

This means removing excess piles of brush and wood that skunks could hide in.

By the way, keeping a skunk as a pet is illegal in Texas.
