"Raise your hand if you wore a name tag today," Tiffany Loftin said to her kindergarten class as they responded with, "Me" while raising their hands.

"Well, with kindergarten you first have to start with the very basics. How to come to your spot in the room. What do we do in the hallways. We've talked about voice levels and when we can talk and when we need to whisper," she explained.

At first, it looks like a regular first day of school. But for Myra P. Martinez Elementary, today marks the first day for the brand new school.

"The beginning of the day was a little hectic, having all the parents come in and drop the kids off. But the kids are so excited to be here," Tiffany said. "They've really enjoyed the beginning of a new school and getting to set all of those traditions."

The faculty said the merge of Fannin and College Heights has been an easy and smooth process, especially because of planned trips together.

"We planned several activities, with students of both schools last year, as well as with teachers. And so it was just like we were one even before we got here," said principal Linda Case.

Tiffany says that those trips and activities can makes change even easier. And even help kids conquer their first day of school nerves.

"You know with kids, a lot of them are apprehensive on the first day of school anyway. Do I know someone in my class? Is it going to be the teacher that i know?" she said. "And giving them some familiar faces to look for in the crowd makes the transition a lot easier."

As the kindergartners learn their letters and numbers, the school will be working to establish new traditions and continue to grow together.
