It's a game of strategy made popular right here in Texas.

Now players in Abilene can compete to be champions.

It's like the game of Bridge- with dominoes instead of cards.

"It's kind of hard to have a strategy, the strategy is to win," said Mary Anne Dempsey.

Players say 42 isn't as complicated as it looks.

Its a popular game for many Texans- and many like Dempsey travel from city to city to compete.

"Well, there's skill involved in it, its a strategy game," she said.

Dempsey and her playing partner came to the key city to try to beat the latest state champion, but they say they aren't nervous.

"You feel like your gonna win, I mean that's the name of the game, is winning," said Dempsey.

The championship game was brought to the rose park senior center for the first time ever due to popular demand.

The goal- achieving the highest score- or the largest number of tricks between partners.

"I'm looking to see what i can bid, what I can bid in, what my offs are," said Zach Troxel.

Many partners like have been playing together for years, so they've had plenty of time to strategize.

"I really pay attention to what she bids, I can kinda tell by what she bids, if shes got a real good hand if its not so good i try to take her off," said Joyce Pence, Dempsey's partner.

However, sometimes, its just not your day.

"It's just like any other kind of game, you have an off day you can beat almost anybody," said Pence.

Just like the rest, they're hoping lady luck is on their side.

The winners received cash prizes up to $180 and can head to the next location to continue competing for the state championship.
