One word that comes to mind for many freshman as they step on to a college campus for the first time is freedom.. It has it's perks, but it could also get you in trouble if you aren't careful.
"What we have at the police department is we have a command center, and we can view the different parking lots, the different dorms, different areas of campus," explains Lt. Randy Motz.
The Abilene Christian University Police Department makes their presence known.
"I see them driving around all the time," says Meradyth Sehon.
"I always, pretty much everyday, see at least one policeman riding around so it makes me feel a lot more comfortable," Royall adds.
Especially after hearing stories from upperclassmen.
Sehon says, "I think it's good. I think it makes me feel safe because I heard there's like creepy men everywhere."
What Sehon is referring to is an incident that happened earlier this year. A male snuck through a dorm window to get into Gardner Hall.
"But I heard we got cameras so that makes me feel safer," Sehon adds.
ACUPD says they are always looking for weak points and things they can make better.
Motz says, "If there are bushes that are growing up in front of dorm windows, we'll get them cut. If there's a poor lighting situation somewhere, we'll get that fixed."
Although it may seem like adults are still in control, especially with curfew, cameras and swipe keys, students say the extra precaution is a good thing to have.
"I know a lot of freshman think it's difficult sometimes, but it's worth it," says Royall.
