Albany Fights Against West Nile

Updated: August 29, 2012
The city of Albany is fighting back against mosquitoes by proactively spraying the entire town.

The city has just one truck and will spray part of town Wednesday night, and the remainder over the rest of the week.

The spraying started last week and officials said it doesn't harm animals, people or grass, but it does help to thin out the mosquito population and lessen the risk of the West Nile virus spreading.

"We haven't had any cases and I don't think Abilene has either," said David Bales, Wastewater District Superintendent, "But it's a precaution, plus it gets rid of some of the nuisance of mosquitoes."

Bales said the threat of West Nile isn't as prevalent in the Big Country as it is in the Metroplex because of our lack of any significant rainfall.
