McMurry is starting their run in NCAA Division II in athletics this year, so this game should be a good test for the program.
ACU is starting the Ken Collums era. He takes over for Chris Thomsen, who built the Wildcats into a Division II playoff regular.
This game should be a good one.
McMurry head coach Hall Mumme said with tongue firmly in cheek, "We are a Christian school here, so is Abilene Christian, so I doubt there's been any trash talking. I would be shocked if there was. No, it's going to be a war!
ACU player Nick Richardson said, "It's a little bit of pride thing. We want to be the football team of Abilene. We are going to see those guys across town afterwards, and we want to hold that over them."
Mumme added, "We're always going to play some D-1's, so hopefully we can keep ACU as 1 of them but for the next 2 years it's going to be a lot of fun."
ACU quarterback Mitchell Gale says, "It means a whole lot to the community and that's good. It's good for the city. It's good for each school. It creates a lot of excitement because it's the 1st game of the 2012 year, so there's a lot of excitement within that."
Saturday's game is the 1st time the 2 schools have played each other in 41 years. The Wildcats won that game 53-20. Saturday's game starts at 6 at Shotwell Stadium.
