From the ground and by air, North Texas is trying to bite back against mosquitoes carrying West Nile Virus.
Dr. Don Read, a West Nile Virus survivor, says it was something he never expected. The virus nearly killed him seven years ago. When he recovered, the colorectal surgeon formed a support group. Now, with the recent rise in West Nile cases, he's re-starting the group next week.
"It's very important to me because when I had it, my wife couldn't find out about anything about it," explains Read.
His case of West Nile was so severe, he was paralyzed and had to learn to walk and write again. He says this is how he knows just what to tell others.
"You're going to get better, you may not be completely well, but you are going to get better than you are now."
Four years ago, Claire McCall became paralyzed from West Nile Virus and encephalitis. She now walks with a cane, and to this day, still has tremors, pain, and fatigue. McCall says she'll join Dr. Read's support group, because he helped her back then.
"It really helps you to know that one, you're not alone in how you feel, emotionally, physically, mentally," McCall said.
Read says mosquitoes will continue to thrive through the end of October. He continues to urge people to take precautions against the West Nile Virus. He said he believes the public has gotten the message.
