APD: Crash Leads Officers to Stolen Vehicle

By: Officer George Spindler, APD
Updated: September 6, 2012
Just before 7 Wednesday night, Officer Jordan Brown contacted a motorist in the 100 block of Grape Street for driving without a license plate. Officer Brown contacted the male driver and also learned that the driver could not produce proof of insurance. During this investigation the male driver was cited for failure to maintain financial responsibility. The driver also gave Officer Brown consent to search himself and the vehicle. During the search, Officer Brown located several pieces of a rock-like substance in a baggie that tested positive for cocaine. The driver was arrested for felony possession of a controlled substance (cocaine).

Wednesday night at about 7:10, Officer Sterling Riddle responded to a disturbance call at a residence in the 3500 block of North 11 Street. APD Dispatch was notified by a female caller alleging that she had just been assaulted by her husband and that she was calling from a neighbor's house. Officer Riddle arrived and contacted the involved parties. Officer Riddle's preliminary investigation revealed that the couple had a verbal argument that turned violent when the husband allegedly pushed his wife to the ground. The victim complained of pain but refused medical attention. The male subject was arrested for assault family violence.

At about 12:30 Thursday morning, APD Dispatch was contacted by a concerned citizen that had seen a male subject almost hit a business with his vehicle in the 4400 block of Ridgemont Drive and alleged the subject was intoxicated. APD Dispatch relayed this information to the Patrol Division and received a second call from a concerned citizen reporting a vehicle crash involving a vehicle with a similar description. Officer Jeremy Nell responded to the call and learned the vehicle crash occurred on Mall of Abilene property. Lt. Mike Collins reported that he located a subject at a business in the 4300 block of Buffalo Gap Road. Officer Nell's investigation revealed that there was a witness to the crash that identified the male subject as the driver that had fled from the single-vehicle crash. Officer Nell contacted the male subject and observed that the man had indicators of intoxication and possible injuries. The subject was taken to a local hospital for treatment of his non-incapacitating injuries. While at the hospital, a specimen of the subject's blood was taken for analysis. Further investigation revealed that the vehicle the subject had drove had been reported stolen out of Corpus Christi, Texas. A records check also confirmed that the subject had an out of state conviction for driving under the influence. The subject was released from the hospital and subsequently arrested for misdemeanor driving while intoxicated (with accident) and for felony possession of stolen property.  This investigation continues.
