Traffic Cops Focus on Mall of Abilene, Making City Safer

This year Chief Stan Standridge completed a Strategic Business Plan for the Abilene Police Department (APD), listing several key goals for the department.
One of the goals is to reduce the number of on-street traffic collisions in the city by 3 percent. This is to continue the original goal of a 3 percent reduction in overall collisions in 2011.
The department was successful and was able to reduce collisions by over 7 percent.
To try and reach this goal, the Police Department evaluates the number of collisions on a monthly basis and identifies the area of town with the most collisions. The area the department is currently working on is the area around the Mall of Abilene.
The Traffic and Patrol Division are going to focus their enforcement in this area to gain voluntary compliance with traffic laws and reduce the number of collisions. The public should expect to see an increase in the number of traffic stops in this area. The most common violations are the failure to yield the right of way and unsafe lane changes.
APD asks that the public use caution when driving not only in this area, but at any time they are driving.
Distracted driving continues to be a growing public safety issue throughout America's roadways. APD encourages all drivers to realize that driving is one of the most dangerous activities most of us participate in on a daily basis.
Thursday morning, the City of Abilene's Mayor Norm Archibald proclaimed support of a national campaign aimed at reducing incidents of texting while driving.
If each of us will take individual responsibility for our own driving behaviors we can reduce most, if not all, motor vehicle collisions. This starts at home and we are asking parents to set a good example behind the wheel. Your children will be the future drivers of America.
