"Weekend Today" Celebrates 25 Years on the Air

By: NBC News
Updated: September 14, 2012
NBC News' "Today," made its Sunday debut in 1987. Five years later, the Saturday edition premiered, expanding the morning show franchise to seven days a week. From breaking news and major interviews, to live concerts and adventures around the world, "Weekend Today" has been a morning fixture for viewers for the last quarter of a century.

On Sunday, September 16, "Weekend Today" will celebrate its 25th Anniversary by looking back at the broadcast's dynamic history. The program will reflect on everything from Maria Shriver's interview with Fidel Castro in 1988 and Garrick Utley's 1989 report when the Berlin Wall came down, to Jenna Wolfe's 2010 trip to Haiti and Lester Holt's report on the earthquake and nuclear crisis in Japan just last year.

The anniversary show will highlight memories from breaking news coverage to unforgettable laughs, including Al Roker's 1992 profile on Jerry Seinfeld, live Broadway performances on the plaza, trips to the Olympics, Super Bowl and beyond.

Former "Weekend Today" anchors Boyd Matson, Garrick Utley, Mary Alice Williams, Scott Simon, Jackie Nespral, Mike Schneider, Giselle Fernandez and Jodi Applegate will reunite live in studio on Sunday morning. Plus, Al Roker, Maria Shriver, Jack Ford, Soledad O'Brien and Campbell Brown will share some of their favorite "Weekend Today" memories from the past.

TODAY.com will highlight top moments from the broadcast's 25 year history. Viewers can vote for their favorite show moment, which will be revealed on Sunday, September 16. The celebration will continue on Twitter by using the hashtag: #WeekendTODAY.
