A Coleman man has died after being struck by a train.

It happened along the Colorado St. crossing on the east side of Coleman.

Officials confirm 33 year-old Rex Dwayne Brooks, Jr. was walking along the train tracks when he was hit.

It was just supposed to be a quick run to the local store.

"We ran into him at the convenience store and he was just talking to us about wanting to go and hang out with us and he just told us that he was headed our way and in about an hour he would be at our house," said Terry Boatright, whose known Brooks for 7 years.

But Brooks never made it back.

He was hit by a train as he was walking along the tracks.

Police say he was wearing his headphones at the time.

"He was walking on the north side of the tracks eastbound and the train came up behind him," said Sgt. Anthony Smith, the lead investigator on the case.

Officials say the 33 year-old Coleman resident died instantly.

They have ruled it as an accident.

"The conductor said that it looked like he might have stumbled and fell over into the tracks just as they were meeting and the train struck him," said Smith.

This is the second deadly train accident in Coleman county in the past two months.

Last month a man was killed after his truck carrying cattle was struck by an oncoming train.

Family and friends are just trying to cope with their loss.

"I'm in shock, I really am in shock," said

Those close to him knew him as Rocco.

"A lot of people's gonna miss him cause he did care about a lot of people and he was a good friend," said Boatright.

It's something they're still trying to digest- as they look back on the last moments they shared with him.

Coleman officials told us they spoke with a witness who was inside their car when brooks was hit.

They along with the train conductor immediately notified police.

Police say brook's body has been taken to a local funeral home and that most of his family has been notified.
