The mayor of Abilene is asking all of us to put down the phone when we are driving today.

Mayor Norm Archibald proclaimed today as "Texting and Driving: It Can Wait" day in the city.

The goal is for every driver to make an effort to go an entire day without texting and driving.

City officials are teaming up with AT&T to remind people that it's dangerous to take our eyes off the road long enough to read or send a text message.

The city of Amarillo recently enacted a ban on texting and driving.

Mayor Archibald speak on a similar city ordinance here on KTAB news at six.
