Your pets can't tell you where and how bad it hurts. So how do you know when it's time for an emergency trip to the vet? According to Dr. Janice Price it's all about noticing the signs.

"It's a tough situation," she explains, "the classic scenario, it's Saturday night, it's midnight, you realize there's a problem with your pet."

So how do you determine whether or not it's worth a trip to the emergency room?

"There are some guidelines that can help you make that decision," says Dr. Price.

Some of the red flags in determining severity worth a trip to the ER, according to Dr. Price, is the presence of blood and any trouble breathing.

"If you see blood it needs to go to the vet," she explains, "if you see blood more than once, you need to go to the vet right now."

How your pets behave when you return after a long day away at work or school could also be a sign about how they're feeling.

She names just a few things to watch out for, for example, "did he come greet you at the door, do you notice an aroma in your house like your pet may have had diarrhea, do you find any vomit anywhere... These are symptoms of a problem with your pet."

Dr. Price says the best thing to do if you're unsure is simply give them a call. Their answering machine will provide you with an emergency number even when the Windmill Animal Hospital is closed.
