"We're sending some candy to the troops cause they don't have much stuff," says Skyler Dodson.
These first-graders are getting a hands-on lesson in respect and selflessness.
Madison Soles says, "I like packing stuff for my dad so he will have a surprise."
Seven-year-old Madison and her classmates are packing care packages for U.S. troops serving our country overseas.
"Cookies and noodles and snacks and all that stuff," says Honesty Griffin.
"I think they're gonna say they like it," Dodson adds.
It all started when two first grade teachers at Southeast Elementary decided to take a different approach on this year's history lesson.
"My heart feels happy. It means a lot for the kids to want to help the troops," says Amy Nixon.
It means even more for the Soles family.
Madison's mother says the last time her husband was deployed was in 2007, so this time it is a bit different.
"It's very hard not having him here but for them to show the love, it means a lot," says Angella Soles.
When everything is said and done, packages are sealed and shipped, all these two teachers want is for our American soldiers to know that they are appreciated.
"This whole community is here and they're supporting what they're doing and just to send a little bit of Sweetwater to them, a little bit of home when they're so far away from their families and their friends," says Bethany Bryan.
