Evacuations Called Off in Ballinger

By: Megan Dobbs
Updated: September 29, 2012

The self-proclaimed "Greatest Little Town in Texas" is now one of the wettest towns in the Lone Star State, and while steady rainfall seems to have brought renewed hope to folks in Ballinger, it also brought flooding and a lot of it.

According to the Runnels County Sheriff's Office, when the flood waters kept rising some homes were at risk. That prompted the call for some residents to evacuate. A local church offered temporary shelter. Once the rain slowed, however, the flood levels lessened, and the evacuations were called off. A spokesperson at the RCSO said there had been no reports of any significant damage in Ballinger homes as of about 5:30 p.m. Saturday.

If that remains the case, retrospection will present a chiefly positive weekend for Ballinger. The West Texas stretch of the Colorado River has been hydrated; seemingly barren land is no longer devoid of moisture; and, hey, the Bearcats shut out Coahoma Friday night! And with comments on Facebook like, "and they say it never rains in Ballinger," and, "Thank you, God, for answering so many of our prayers," it seems this little Texas town is not only great, but grateful.
