ACU Announces Homecoming Musical, 42nd Street

Tap dancing, singing and the atmosphere of Broadway is coming to Abilene. ACU's homecoming musical production of 42nd Street will take place October 19 through 21 at the Abilene Civic Center.

Winner of the 1980 Tony Award for "Best New Musical" and the 2001 Tony Award for "Best Revival of a Musical," 42nd Street is a timeless, inspiring Broadway fairy tale about a stage-struck understudy who becomes an overnight star.

The show features foot-tapping music and a hit parade of songs: "Lullaby of Broadway," "We're in the Money," "Shuffle Off to Buffalo" and the spectacular title number.

"42nd Street has a lightheartedness that is so infectious that people can't help but leave the theater humming the tunes and feeling happy," says director Adam Hester. "It is such a positive, upbeat show."

Last year, Broadway's biggest revival was Anything Goes, another tap show.

Because there will be several Anything Goes tours staged across the country in the near future, Hester wanted to prepare his seniors for auditions by giving them experience in tap dance.

"Educationally, it seemed appropriate to choose this show, which would be both an audience pleaser for homecoming and would help my students improve their craft," Hester says. He notes that since tap is "such a technical kind of dance," students need the practice provided by a full-length, complex show such as 42nd Street.
