City Council to Determine Authorization of Urban Gardens

Updated: October 8, 2012
An idea that is generating a lot of interest in the Key City will make it's way to this week's city council meeting.

On Thursday, the council will decide if urban gardens will be allowed in Abilene.

Right now, the city does not allow water meters to be used on vacant lots, preventing most community gardens.

After hearing interest from several churches in the area, the city's planning and zoning committee drafted a proposal to allow for the cultivation of such gardens.

The council will also take a first look at something that could help prevent precious metal thieves from selling stolen products, and help Abilene police catch them in the act.

The proposed ordinance would require all dealers and buyers to document all transactions.

It would require them to identify the seller, photograph the precious metals, and retain those metals for a minimum of eleven days.

Scrap metals would be retained for 72 hours.

Police say the new measures will help them successfully investigate these crimes.
