Abilene Library Offers New Self-Check Service

Checking out library books at Abilene's downtown branch just got a little faster.

It took about six months and hundreds of hours of hard work, but the library is now using "self-checkout" machines.

The process started back in April and just went into place last week.

Workers had to add magnetic labels onto around 200,000 items, including books, dvds and cds.

"It's very simple," explains city librarian Ricki Brown. " You just scan your library card, put in your pin like you do at the bank, lay your items on the mat, and it can be multiple items."

All three Abilene library branches now use the self-checkout system.

The conversion process at the downtown location cost about $87,000.
