It's as simple as pressing a button. But it's something that many forget.

"I honestly don't lock my car," said Helen Jackson.

Helen frequently forgets to lock her car when running errands, and even leaves her purse behind.

"If I go just really quick, run into the store, I'll just get some cash out and run into the store," she said.

And even though her great aunt had valuables taken from her unlocked car a few weeks ago, Helen says she still doesn't think about it much.

"I'm not scared because I don't have any personal belongings," she explained.

And APD says a large percent of the car burglaries this year could have been prevented, just by locking the car.

"More than 70% of these car burglaries, the vehicles are unlocked. That is unacceptable behavior," said APD Chief of Police Stan Standridge.

Saying her husband constantly tells her to lock up or hide her purse, Helen says it's just too easy to forget..

"You don't really think, 'Oh well my car might get broken into so I need to lock it.' You know,  you don't usually think about that. You think about what you're doing during that time."

APD wants to remind everyone, again, that the citizens of Abilene are the first line of defense when fighting crime.
