City Council Approves Neighborhood Gardens

By: Katie Thompson
Updated: October 11, 2012
The Abilene City Council Thursday morning voted to clear the way for neighborhood garden plots.

The council approved a proposal to allow churches and neighborhood groups to get city water to irrigate their community gardens.

That will allow them to grow fresh vegetables to share in the neighborhood groups and with people in need.

The council also gave preliminary approval to a new city ordinance on businesses that buy scrap metal.

Thieves have been stealing metal objects and turning them in for cash, but the new ordinance would require the business owners to document all of the purchases with pictures of the seller and hold the merchandise for three days.

Police say they hope it would reduce the incidence of metal thefts.

The issue will be back on the council agenda on Thursday, October 25.

Citizens will have the the chance to address the council about the proposed city ordinance during that meeting.
