Due to difficulties in locating the fire, and due to the large number of building occupants, a second alarm response was requested.
As a precaution, firefighters evacuated the entire building and were soon able to discover the fire in a second floor unit.
The fire was contained to one bedroom, but the rest of the apartment suffered extensive smoke damage.
Firefighter training and the use of a compressed-air foam system (CAFS) are credited with preventing water damage to the other units of the building.
The sole occupant was not home at the time of the fire and it was several hours before officials were able to make contact.
It took less than twelve minutes to completely extinguish, but it was almost an hour before all of the smoke could be removed from the building, and occupants were able to return to the surrounding apartments.
There were no injuries reported and damage is estimated to be less than $10,000.
The exact cause of the fire is undetermined and Abilene Fire Department officials continue with their investigation.
