Abilene Zoo Attendance Soars

By: City of Abilene Press Release
Updated: October 12, 2012
Once again, attendance at the Abilene Zoo exceeded past records.

During the last fiscal year, October 2011 through September 2012, 217,103 guests visited the zoo, an increase of 9,492 individuals from the record set the previous fiscal year.

There has been a steady increase in attendance since 2005 when the zoo had 114,328 visitors.

"We enjoyed a cooler summer, continued zoo improvements and positive exposure in the community," said Abilene Zoo Director Bill Gersonde. "Besides being an affordable family adventure, we strive to have new and different experiences for our guests each time they visit."

During the past year, the zoo opened the South American Pampas Exhibit and celebrated the hatching of the very first baby flamingo and two crowned cranes.

Future projects include the opening of Caribbean Cove this coming spring.

Demolition for the site has already begun and it will feature a variety of Central and South American animals including monkeys, parrots, toucans and sloth.

The Abilene Zoo is open daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. with the front gates closing at 4:30.
