APD: Officer Drug by Suspect's Car

Thursday night at 10:35, an APD officer attempted to contact a motorist for driving with no headlights as it traveled eastbound on South 14 Street near Butternut Street. The officer made brief contact with the male driver and then requested assistance from other officers through APD Dispatch. Dispatch was further advised that the vehicle fled the scene. APD Dispatch was then informed that the involved officer at the traffic stop had been drug along by the suspect's car as it fled the scene. Officer Christopher Milliorn assisted on this call and helped conduct the preliminary investigation. Officers were able to locate the suspect vehicle several minutes later. Officers activated their emergency equipment in an attempt to stop the vehicle, but the driver failed to stop and continued driving. A vehicle chase ensued and necessitated the use of stop-sticks. The stop-sticks were successfully deployed and the suspect vehicle finally came to a stop in the 1700 block of Anderson Street where the driver was arrested. The investigation revealed that the driver had grabbed onto the involved officer during the initial traffic stop and fled while doing so. The involved officer sustained what appeared to be minor injuries. However, the officer was able to complete his tour of duty. The male driver had also thrown a beer bottle and marijuana out of his vehicle during this incident. The driver also displayed indicators of intoxication and refused to perform standard field sobriety tests. A records check revealed that the driver had eight previous convictions for DWI. A sample of the driver's blood was taken. The male suspect was arrested on four separate felony charges: aggravated assault on a peace officer, DWI, evading, and tampering with evidence. This investigation continues.

Friday morning at about 12:25 a.m., Officer Carye Adkins responded to a disturbance at a business in the 3100 block of Oldham Lane. A store employee notified APD Dispatch that an irate female customer was causing problems. Officer Adkins was able to contact the involved parties and diffuse the disturbance. However, the female subject was warned not to return to the store and was subsequently ordered to leave the store's premises. The female subject was accompanied by a friend who was in a vehicle, but the subject refused to leave the premises after being advised of the consequences if she failed to do so. The female subject continued to ignore the officer's commands to leave. The subject was then arrested for misdemeanor criminal trespass.

Friday morning at about 2:15 a.m., Officer Edward Cutbirth attempted to contact a male subject after swerving his patrol vehicle to avoid a collision with the subject. The male subject was observed walking in the middle of the roadway in the 1400 block of S. Danville Drive. Officer Cutbirth turned his vehicle around and observed the subject stumbling as he walked. As soon as Officer Cutbirth activated his emergency lights, the subject took off running. The subject continued running even after being commanded to stop by Officer Cutbirth. The subject attempted to get onto the freeway but could not get over a barrier. The male subject was arrested. The investigation revealed that the subject was also intoxicated and had an outstanding drug-related felony warrant. The subject was arrested on his warrant, and for misdemeanor evading and public intoxication.
