Wylie Students Trade In Books For Exercise

Kids are exchanging their pencils for some exercise.

"I love playing softball, soccer and basketball," says Morgan Moore.

And doing that is no problem for Wylie Independent School students.

The mayor's council instituted an initiative called "Abilene on the Move" to encourage people to get active and stay physically fit.

"I think it was pretty smart to do that because some people think that they should just stay in their house and play video games all day of their life," says fifth grader, Jackson Hooten.

The initiative came at a perfect time for these students.

The school district received a Physical Education Program grant in 2011 which allowed them to purchase materials like pedometers to help encourage their students to get moving.

Madison Burden explains, "Our goal is everyday to get over 10,000 steps on your pedometer. I mean it seems easy but really when you put it on and you notice you're half way through the day and you have about 3,000 steps."

Maybe it's not that easy, but it is the effort that counts.

"If you give children a plan and a goal, they will love it. You just give them some sort of challenge and they'll do their best to meet it," says P.E. teacher, Kristi Davis.
