Volunteers Help Locals Winterize Their Homes

By: Nora Hartfeil
Updated: October 13, 2012
"Heat the Town" volunteers helped by cleaning or replacing heating systems and winterizing homes for people in need.

The volunteers performed carbon dioxide checks and standard maintenance like cleaning heat exchangers and changing filters. Experts say they often see house fires when there's a chill in the air from heaters firing up after sitting dormant all year.

The president of Abilene's Chapter of the Air Conditioning Contractors Association says preventative maintenance checks are highly important going into the cold months because they can cause critical safety problems that could be life-threatening.
