City Council Public Meeting to Decide New Scrap Metal Laws

By: Katie Thompson
Updated: October 24, 2012
The Chief of Police is asking the City of Abilene for help fighting crimes involving stolen metals.

APD proposed tighter regulations on the sale of scrap metal.

The ordinance would require businesses to hold scrap metal for a period of 72 hours before it is processed.

Police hope this window of time will bring down crime.

If passed, this ordinance would require documentation and photographs of all metal transactions.

This also means businesses buying precious metals will have to hold jewelry and other metals for eleven days before it's melted or processed.

A public hearing and vote will take place at Thursday's council meeting at 8:30 a.m. at City Hall.
