The Abilene City Council Thursday morning delayed a decision on a police department proposal to make it harder for thieves to make money off of stolen scrap metal.

Burglars have been stealing copper, brass and other metals and selling it to the salvage businesses.

The police department proposed a city ordinance to  require scrap businesses to take pictures of the sellers and the material and wait to process any metal they buy for at least 72 hours.

People who buy gold and silver jewelery would have to wait at least 11 days to melt down the precious metals.

Some are complaining that the delay will cause businesses that buy metals a loss in revenue.

The delay will give the salvage business owners time to meet with police for possible changes.
