Kathy Cheatham is going about her daily tasks despite waiting for a phone call.

"Well, my heart kind of jumps a beat when the phone rings," the Red Cross volunteer explained. "And I see it's the Red Cross on the ID. But otherwise I just go about my business."

Kathy is one of two Red Cross volunteers in Abilene who will be headed to the East Coast to help with disaster relief after super-storm Sandy. And both could be notified to leave at any moment.

"Ready to go and then when they call you, and tell you to leave then you go wherever by whatever transportation you're going by," said Harry Dhans, who is on standby to volunteer in New York.

Both volunteers have experience helping in disaster relief both locally and nationally. And they said it's being able to help those in need that makes the hard work worth while.

"That really says a lot about our organization and kind of about the people of Abilene, how they're willing to go at the drop of a hat to help other people," said Allen Brooks, Disaster Field Specialist.

Kathy has prepared for her trip while on standby. Packing warm clothes, cleaning the house, doing laundry and keeping track of all the things she needs to do.But she said that she's just ready to get out there and help.

"I'm anxious to get there. I'm anxious to see what my own eyes what's actually happened in the area that I am," she said. "And to be able to see what those people need and how i can help them."
