Reminder: Abilene Regional To Host Diabetes Health Fair Thursday

Some people may not know but November is Diabetes Awareness Month. It's a disease that affects 25 million Americans.

Diabetes is a growing disease in which there are high levels of sugar in the blood. According to the Texas Department of Health, Texas has over one million diagnosed and half a million undiagnosed of this disease.

As a way to spread awareness and ask people to get checked, Abilene Regional Medical Center is hosting a Diabetes Health Fair this Thursday. The free health fair provide individuals with information on prevention and ways to a better health. People can asks questions to medical professionals and even a free blood sugar and blood pressure will be given.

People with diabetes undergo different types of treatments. Type 1 Diabetes takes injections shots a day due to no insulin produced in the pancreas, plus, watch what type of food is consumed. People with type 2 Diabetes is treated with particular diet and pills and may have to add insulin injections.

Jon Yarbrough from Abilene Regional Medical Center asks anyone to get checked-up especially when risk factors include member of an ethnic group, family history of diabetes, high or low blood sugar, obese, age 45 or older and are in limited physical exercise.

His advice states it's wise to consider these variables and to avoid high risks by getting checked.
