Students Cast their Presidential Vote as Part of Learning Experience

Students at Jane Long Elementary got a taste of the democratic process this morning.

Children participated in a mock election in the cafeteria.

The process was the final part of a lesson on how the election process works.

Students have been learning about the candidates and the election and today they got to cast their vote for the candidate of their choice.

Teachers say the process is a way to encourage children to want to vote in a real election once they are old enough.

"We wanted the kids to express the freedom they have as Americans to actually vote," explains Amy Hess, second grade teacher. Students filled out a voter's registration card and then they get to bring it, and they either choose Obama or Romney. They put a check, they put it in the ballot box, and they actually get a 'I Voted' sticker as well."

Teachers say they remember participating in a mock election when they were kids and hope today's events will stick in the new generation's minds as well.
