HPU Adds 2 To Sports Hall Of Fame

BROWNWOOD, Texas - Longtime Howard Payne University faculty athletic representative Hall Lane and golfer Tim Pavlas will be the two inductees in the 2012-2013 HPU Sports Hall of Fame class and will be officially inducted in a ceremony on Friday, May 3, 2013, the HPU athletic department announced today.
 
Hall Lane graduated from Richland Springs HS in 1950 and the same year enlisted in the United States Air Force. While serving he completed bachelor's degree in Mathematics from North Texas State College in 1954. After receiving discharge two years early, Lane took a job teaching math and science at Denton High School in Denton, Texas.
 
In 1960, Hal moved his family to Brownwood where he began his 36 year teaching career as a mathematics professor and would eventually receive tenure. In 1961, he received a Master's degree from North Texas State College.
 
Hal served on the Howard Payne faculty from 1960-1996 and as the Faculty Athletic Representative for 26 years, 1970-1996. He served as the President of the Lone Star Conference for two years and Vice President for three. He worked as the eligibility chairman for the Lone Star Conference and also represented the NCAA Division II on a joint committee of NCAA and NAIA schools.
 
Hal and his wife, Margaret, still live in Brownwood and are huge supporters of the Howard Payne athletic department.
 
A Bryan, Texas native, Tim Pavlas graduated from Bryan high school in 1995. He then attended and played golf at Sam Houston State University before transferring to Howard Payne in the fall of 1997.
 
Playing three seasons for the Yellow Jacket golf team, Tim received Honorable Mention All-American honors in 1998 and 2000. Tim finished second at the American Southwest Conference individual championship in 1998 shooting a 222 over three rounds and went on to earn an invite to the NCAA Division III national championship tournament. He improved his game the next two seasons winning the ASC Individual championship in 1999 and 2000.
 
In 1999, he finished the ASC tournament with a field best 213, three under par for the championship. He shot a 228 to claim the 2000 ASC title and also earned a second invitation to the NCAA Division III national tournament. Tim led the HPU men's golf teams to two third-place ASC tournament finishes.
 
He was also a member of Zeta Chi while attending Howard Payne. He graduated in 2000 with a degree in Business Finance. After college, he has worked in the banking and finance industry and is now also working with youth instructional golf programs in the Bryan area.
 
The Howard Payne Sports Hall of Fame inductees will have their ceremony in the evening on Friday, May 3, 2013, in the Bullion Suites at the Mabee University Center. There will be a Howard Payne athletics golf tournament on Saturday, May 4, 2013 at the Hideout Golf Club at Lake Brownwood. The golf tournament is open to the public with proceeds benefiting the HPU athletic programs.
