They're describing it as a massacre.

Thirteen pigs slaughtered overnight by a pack of dogs.

"Your heart goes out to the animals because when you know they went through some excruciating pain," said Riley Barnett, who teaches agriculture at Roby High school.

The pigs were being kept at the school's pig pen as students at Roby high school were taking care of them and getting ready to compete.

"These kids, I mean from the time they get them til they go to the stock show, I mean that's their little brother and sister," said Barnett.

Officials believe the dogs jumped over the three foot fence protecting the pigs.

Stray dogs are becoming increasingly common around the town, but nothing ever like this.

"You know it's a terrible thing when an animal is caged up and other animals come up there and get up there and you know just start to slaughter them and it was just a savage thing," said J.A. Robinson, Fisher Co. Sheriff.

However, there just may be a happy ending to this story.

Its only been a few days and already they've received 10 pigs from all around the country.

"Indiana, Illinois, people in Oklahoma have called and then just neighbors from around here," said Barnett.

The students need just four more pigs  to be able to meet the Nov. 30 deadline for state competition.

For now they're being kept in a more secure and enclosed pen, with police protection.

"It wasn't a good situation by no means but were making it, turning it into I guess a good one with all the support and help that we've got from people around us," said Barnett.

Although their old pigs will probably never be fully replaced.

Each new gift has seemed to bring a little bit of life and above all hope.

Two pigs did survive and they're being kept at students houses.

The Fisher Co. sheriff says the dogs were never found.

He says they've had other incidents with dogs attacking cattle, but never anything like this.
