Students at Siebert Elementary might be concerned about their upcoming spelling tests, but unlike last year, the furthest thing from their minds is getting bit by a snake.

"We did locate the snake in the classroom underneath some cabinets, and everything was ripped out", says Mary Jones, principal.

Though then second grader, Edwin Gutierrez, suffered pain from the bite, the tiny snake triggered major reaction from the school.

"We spent seven days at a church just to make sure everything was taken care of. And that was before the snake was found. We never really thought there was a nest, but we treated it like there could be", Jones tells us.

Ever since the snake incident from last year, they now have monitors walk around the perimeter of the school, sometimes several times a day to make sure no snakes get in.

"We didn't have any long-term frights or anything like that. We are just more aware of things that could be, and we want to make sure we don't have a repeat incident", explains Jones.

While spotting snakes in west Texas, especially in the grass, isn't all that strange, this school year, Siebert Elementary remains snake-free, and is standing guard to prevent any further problems from slithering in.

The small rattlesnake was the only one found in the building once professionals inspected the school.
