Dyess We Care Team Bakes for Veterans

"It's about people and it's about caring about people. And it's about making sure people know they matter," says Debra Notturno-Strong.

For Debra, a 23-year veteran, it's about family.

"After spending all this time in the military, you really realize that your family is so much bigger than what your personal family is," she says.

To the Dyess We Care Team, not helping wasn't even an option.

"It was a no-brainer," says Gordon Story, founder and director of the team. "They're veterans, they're part of our military family. We wanted to get involved with it."

So the baking began.

Apple cobbler, pecan pie, carrot cake and pumpkin pie were all made from scratch.

"To get it not store bought, or out of a package. It's actually homemade," explains head chef of Meals on Wheels Fred Ghant. "You know it's a good feeling to get something homemade occasionally."

And the baking is just the beginning.

"This is a way for me to give to them what they need. Cuz i didn't get everything i needed growing up, so this is a way to give back to somebody that does need something," explains Jacob Hicks.

In a matter of only days, the entire community pulled together to make this dinner possible.

"They're gonna see that, yes, people still care," says Story.

Perhaps seeing their own military family help will bring another feeling to the surface...

"For a veteran, when you go to that dessert station, and they realize wow this was hand baked by men and women of Dyess Airforce Base, it's gonna be a little extra tasty," says a cheery Story.

With 4 different desserts to choose from, tasty won't be a problem.
