Police Probe Complete in Case of Synder Man Shot after Threatening Child, Police

By: Snyder Daily News
Updated: November 19, 2012
Texas Rangers have concluded the investigation into the police shooting of an armed subject on Nov. 3.

Snyder Police Lt. Brian Haggard was placed on administrative leave after shooting 52-yearold Dale Rivera at the subject's residence after a two-hour standoff. Haggard is back on duty.

Police were dispatched to the scene and found Rivera holding a knife to his infant son. He then told police he was going to kill the boy and himself.

According to police, after negotiations were unsuccessful, Rivera went to the front door and made a comment about which officer to go after, then put the child down just inside the residence. Police said he then ran out of the residence holding a knife in each hand and was shot as he advanced toward the officers.

Ranger Phil Vandygriff said the case has been wrapped up and will be turned over to District Attorney Dana Cooley. She will then present the case to a Scurry County grand jury.

Vandygriff did not release any details of the investigation and preliminary autopsy reports have not been released. Snyder Police Chief Terry Luecke said the case probably would go before the grand jury.
