AFD Warns Citizens to Take Caution Cooking Thanksgiving Turkey's

By: Kristin Anderson
Updated: November 20, 2012
Thanksgiving is just a few days away, and the Abilene Fire Department is warning those who deep-fry their turkey to be careful this year.

Make sure you don't use a deep-frier inside, or even in a garage or covered porch.

It's safest out in a well-ventilated area. Reading the directions and making sure the turkey isn't frozen before cooking it is also a good way to prevent fires.

However, people are reminded to watch their food while cooking, as unattended food is one of the highest causes of house fires.

"Whether it's on the stove or a deep-frier or anything, make sure it's attended to, and to keep the kids away from it and monitor your cooking," warns Jay Sanders, AFD Public Education.

The fire department also encourages people to have a fire extinguisher ready in the kitchen just in case.
