By: Officer George Spindler, APD
Updated: November 26, 2012
Saturday morning at about 2:20 a.m., Officer Chris Jennings contacted a motorist in the 2700 block of Maple Street after observing the motorist traveling at a high rate of speed as it continued to accelerate in a 45 mph zone. He contacted the male driver and smelled the odor of an alcoholic beverage coming from the driver. During the investigation, Officer Jennings observed the driver display indicators of intoxication. The driver conducted standard field sobriety tests which he performed poorly. The driver was arrested and taken to county jail where he provided breath samples. Breath samples taken revealed that the driver's BAC was 0.148 and 0.157. The driver was arrested on an enhanced misdemeanor charge of DWI (Class A) based on a BAC result exceeding 0.15.

Sunday at about 6:15 p.m., Officers Darrin Ruiz and Matthew Allen responded to a disturbance call at a business in the 1600 block of Hwy 351. APD Dispatch had been contacted by a store employee concerning an uncooperative subject detained for alleged shoplifting. Officer Allen contacted a male subject at the store and learned that loss prevention personnel had observed some deceptive practices from a male subject selecting merchandise in the store. Specifically, the subject selected several merchandise items and then removed the barcode tag from one merchandise item and place it on another merchandise item of lesser value. The subject then purchased only a portion of the merchandise at a self-checkout aisle and attempted to leave with unpaid items. Property valued at approximately $462 was recovered. The subject was arrested on two misdemeanor offenses: fraudulent removal of writing and theft. The subject was warned not to return to the store.

Sunday night at about 10, Officer Andrew Valdez contacted a motorist in the 2300 block of State Street for a traffic violation. He contacted two occupants that included a female passenger. A K-9 unit assisted in this traffic stop. During the investigation, the K-9 alerted on the vehicle for the presence of narcotics. A search of the vehicle revealed a white rock-like substance in a baggie under the passenger's purse that had been in between her legs. A pipe commonly used to smoke crack cocaine was also located in the female subjects purse. A search of the female subject revealed another pipe on her person. The white substance tested positive for cocaine. During this investigation, Officer Valdez also detected some deception from the female subject about her identity. She had wrongfully identified herself as another person and Officer Valdez confirmed same. He discovered that the subject also had four outstanding misdemeanor municipal arrest warrants. The female subject was arrested for felony possession of a controlled substance (cocaine), misdemeanor failure to identify and her warrants.
